Stay at Home Wife and Mother

Home and Family from a SAHWM's Perspective

Stay at Home Wife and Mother’s Resume

August 2, 2013

Are you a stay at home wife and mother? Are there times when you were considering going back to the workforce? During those times, have you ever thought of what you are going to write when you will be creating your resume?

The times that you spent as a full-time homemaker may leave a gap in your work history. Some SAHWM will not consider including their stint at home as a job but your “job” as a SAHWM is challenging and warrants attention and recognition.

There is a website, however, where I found a good job description of a homemaker. This is from The Incidental Domestic:

Busy SAHWMs

July 31, 2013

Almost two weeks ago, I thought I found my inspiration to blog. I just had my site redesigned, even launched a Facebook page, and was very excited to blog again.

As a stay at home wife and mother, however, finding time to blog is becoming like a 1884 silver dollar to me – quite limited and too priceless. With lots of stuff to prioritize (especially my youngest child who is just learning how to balance and walk), I can’t focus on writing something. The moment I open the laptop, it’s like the signal for my eldest to shout “Mommy!!!” and for little one to wake up from sleeping. And, of course, hubby wants a piece of “us” time too.

Oh well, I guess that’s better than spending 8 to 10 hours working outside the home and then still being expected to do all these tasks that I am doing now when I get home.

SAHWMs are busy people too… no time for blogging.

Stay at Home Wives and Moms Should Read The News Too

July 11, 2013

woman-baby-reading-newspaperHave you heard of the lightning-caused fire here in Nevada that started in July 1? Well, I had learned about the Carpenter 1 fire a week after it started ravaging the Mt. Charleston area, leaving thousands of charred acres behind – and I am from Las Vegas!

Unlike working moms and wives who have their co-workers to mingle and chat with about current events, stay at home wives and mothers like me have the tendency to be secluded in our homes. If you add to that the fact that my husband is also retired from the workforce (no one to update him of current events too), we do not watch news channels on TV at home and we go out to attend church and shop just once a week, I wouldn’t be surprised if the world has come to a halt and we’re still not aware of it until our next weekend grocery trip.

This realization made me realize of how important it is for a stay at home wife and mother like me to keep abreast with what’s happening to the world outside our little heaven called home. I know a lot of people who abhor reading news because they usually turn out to be just about bad things, people and events but, hey, no man’s an island so it’s essential to be aware of what’s happening around us.

Here are some reasons why stay at home wives and mothers should read about current events:

  • to become aware of global and local issues affecting us
  • to understand economy, politics and the environment so that we can come up with informed decisions in our lives
  • to improve our vocabulary, critical-thinking, problem solving and listening skills
  • to develop empathy and social awareness by connecting with others

Have some thoughts that you’d like to share with me and to the others who are reading this article? Anything to add to my list?

Please drop a line in the comments section. Thanks in advance!

Keeping Fit as Stay at Home Wives and Mothers

June 26, 2013

Do you sometimes find yourself looking at a stay at home wife and mother (SAHWM) and asking yourself how she had managed to keep herself fit and maintain her whistle-bait figures all through the years? Well, some of them are the lucky ones who are blessed with that special metabolism that goes overdrive in keeping those fat at bay. Less fortunate (but determined) ones are those who had to spend a lot of time and effort to stay in shape and succeeded in it.

Whether you are blessed with those good genes or you’re on the other side of the spectrum (in terms of body shape and metabolism rate), it is important that you, stay at home wife and mother, keep yourself fit. There are endless possibilities to do that at home and I would like to share with you the following tips on how to keep fit as a SAHWM to get you started on your track to fitness:

1. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

Do you remember that “wax on, wax out” scene from the Karate Kid movie? The teacher taught his student karate through simple tasks like washing a car, sanding the floor, catching flies and painting the fence. It is possible to do some exercises without a need to buy exercise equipment and stuffs like best yoga balls and mats. This would mean, however, that you will have to rely less on technology and use your muscles to do all those household tasks. For example, instead of using a floor polisher, you will need to scrub the floors yourself.

2. Cook healthy food.

Serving healthy foods at home will help make your family fit and healthy. Regularly eating junk foods that have lots of preservatives, fats and sugar will not only make you fat but will make your body weak and susceptible to diseases.

3. Hydrate.

A lot has been said about the importance of drinking enough water and keeping our bodies hydrated. If you can’t consume at least eight glasses of water daily, you can always set an alarm every few hours.

4. Keep yourself active.

Don’t let soap operas tie you to the couch or internet surfing keep you glued to the computer monitor for hours. Play games with your kids, take a brisk walk outside if the weather permits, or do stuffs that will keep you physically active.

5. Rest and sleep.

Having too much z’s and lacking sleep are both not good for your health. Be sure to take enough hours of sleep and rest when you are tired.

Are there other tips that you would add to my list? Please do share them in the comments section.

Blogging Hiatus Due to Slow Computer

June 24, 2013

Hello everyone, how are you all doing?

I’ve been on a blogging hiatus lately because I am having problems with my computer. As a blogger, a slow computer can become a big problem. I had it serviced and I was not able to pick it up right away, thus, my time away from blogging.

I was told by the technician that my computer was slow because there’s not enough free space in the computer’s memory anymore. In addition to that, the disk was fragmented and, yes, there’s a virus as well.

So far, my computer is running faster now. Good enough for me – at least for my blog hopping activities.

The Package is On Its Way

June 7, 2013

Our package is on its way now to my family overseas. It was picked last Wednesday and we were informed that it will take about 40 days for the box to reach my family in the Philippines.

Most of the stuff that are in the box are those items that my parents bought during their vacation here early this year. Instead of paying of over the limit baggage fees, we opted to have them sent via door-to-door cargo delivery.

We didn’t know that my dad was planning to have me buy a Delafield petroleum drop hose to be sent along the package. He messaged us in the morning of Wednesday but everything was packed already. Besides, the delivery man (or the man from the cargo company) was set to pick up the package in the afternoon so we can’t send him that.

For sure, my mom will be happy to use her kitchen-aide mixer while my dad will love checking out his magic bullet and bicycle chain ring – among other stuff.
