Assisted Living or Home Care?

April 8, 2019

mother-grandmother-daughter-woman

Whether it is parents or grandparents, most seniors prefer to live in their own home. Is there a point when an assisted living facility would be a better option? That could depend on many things including the preference of your loved one. Most are very adamant about leaving familiar surroundings for a different living arrangement.

How Much Assistance Do They Require?

As people continue to live longer, seniors that live alone in their own home has increased. Although many are quite capable of taking care of themselves on a daily basis, there are certain tasks that may have become more difficult. Depending on whether they live in a home that they own or another type of housing, there might be other considerations such as lawn care or home maintenance. This can generally be taken care of by family members or by hiring someone.

If there are particular aspects of day living that they need help with, a home care worker can be of assistance. If help is needed for things like preparing meals, housekeeping, doing laundry, and other chores, home care can be a good choice. Your loved one can live where they want and still receive the assistance that is needed. Even if they need more specialized help, one can arrange such as nursing care.

When Assisted Living is Beneficial

If safety is a concern, assisted living can provide peace of mind for seniors. They do not have to worry about being alone at night or being susceptible to a break-in or some other situation that would be difficult for them to handle alone. Another beneficial aspect of choosing assisted living is social interaction. Many seniors outlive friends and are often isolated due to transportation problems or for other reasons. Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Campus is one example of a community that provides a masonic retirement home.

Deciding on the right living situation for an elderly loved one can be difficult. It is extremely important to include them in the decision making process. Remaining independent is one of the biggest concerns of seniors.

What to Look for in a Commercial Contractor

March 16, 2019

engineers-handshake-at-meeting

If you’re planning a commercial remodel or repair project around your business, you may want to consider outsourcing the work to a contractor to do the job. Having a contractor can make your job go much more smoothly. If you’ve never had to hire a contractor before to do work around your business, here are some things you should look for.

Bidding Process

Whether you’re looking for electrical contractors Orange Park FL or someone to repaint the interior of your building, you should put out a bid. This allows you to vet several contractors at once to determine who’s best suited for the job.

Check Licensing

A reputable contracting company will be licensed and insured. Before you ever hire a contractor for any job, check to be sure that they have the proper licenses and insurances. If they don’t, it’s a big red flag that they may not be reputable and that you should seriously think twice before hiring them.

References

Contractors should be able to provide you with references from people they’ve done business with in the past. This can help you with insight into the quality of their work, how timely they are on jobs and the overall cost to completion. If a contractor cannot or will not provide you with references, walk away from them.

Contracts

Contractors should be familiar with working within the constraints of a contract. These documents clearly outline expectations for the job and the payment plan. If your contractor isn’t willing to sign a contract, then you should consider using someone else. When drawing up a contract, have it looked at by an attorney to be sure everything makes sense before signing.

These are some simple things you should look for when hiring a contractor. It may seem like a lot of work up front, but it can protect your business and ensure a quality product in the end.

Tips to Manage the Family Wardrobe

March 13, 2019

family-shopping-clothes

As the woman of the home, wanting your children and husband to leave the house looking right makes sense that. After all, your children and husband are a reflection of you. You are a reflection of them as well. If one looks raggedy, everyone looks raggedy. If you don’t want to have a raggedy-looking family, there are a few ways you can manage your family wardrobe. Consider the following tips.

1. Consider what’s needed.

As you’re getting the kids dressed each morning, consider the items you tend to reach for. Stock up on those items. Whether you need t-shirts, onesies or socks, take note of those items. This will help you when you’re ready to go shopping later. Take note of your own closet. If you’re constantly reaching for a black turtleneck that’s not there, put it on the list of items you need to purchase next.

2. Don’t be afraid of online shopping.

Online shopping is a gem. Gone are the days where you have to go sorting through bins and racks to find the perfect fit. Now, you can purchase everything from men’s neckties to traditional baby girl clothes. As you sort through the list of items you want to purchase, you can go Google searches to find exactly what you want. There are people who are afraid of online shopping because they’re afraid that the items won’t fit perfectly. Thankfully, most online retailers include accurate measurements on their websites. As long as you do the measurements to see which size fits best, you shouldn’t run into any issues.

3. Take advantage of sales.

It is commonly known that you can find amazing deals in the off-season. Around springtime, that is when you will want to purchase garments and shoes for winter. Most stores are trying to get rid of their current season’s inventory. Around the end of August and the beginning of September, purchase bathing suits, sandals and sundresses, as they tend to be cheaper at that time. If there are few places you like to shop, sign up for their email lists. When you get the alerts, you can purchase clothing at discounted rates.

Bummers of Moving – and How to Dispel Them

March 12, 2019

woman-stressed-moving

Although the task of moving your home furnishings is daunting, choosing the right mover can help. Many people who hire movers are rightfully anxious. In particular, they fear for their prized possessions against breakage or damage. Only a moving service that understands how valuable items are to owners can understand the problem.

The Three Bummers of Moving

In truth, the excitements of moving probably make things worse. Everybody is looking forward to the new place. Even though moving is an opportunity for change, something you value will not make it there in one piece. That is the first bummer. In addition, someone is going to be upset by the problems. That is the second bummer. Finally, despite all the planning in the world, it takes a day or two longer than you expected. If you found a mover that can solve those three bummers, you might have found the ideal moving service.

The Safe Way

To begin with, start packing early. Pack valuables in sturdy boxes and keep the weight around 25-pounds. Your household furnishings or office items can all be moved successfully with patience and attention to the safety of the items. If you hire a company with a record of moving people successfully, they can probably help you. A moving company that understands and one that has experienced many moves might make your life easier.

Large Items and Valuable Antiques

Find a mover that is experienced with big items. They can do the job because they will show up with the right sized truck. That is a time saver. When it comes to valuable items like art and antiques, query the company and discover if they recognize and take special care of valuable items. They may even provide storage for stuff you cannot put in your new dwelling. That is the kind of example of a moving service Santa Monica that you want to hire.

The bummers of moving will raise their ugly heads only after you’re well into the move. Get out ahead of the problems by doing a little homework and hiring a moving service that can genuinely help you.

Managing Your Schedule as a Stay-At-Home Wife and Mom

March 8, 2019

woman-housewife-plant

If the job were a paid one, stay-at-home mothers could easily make six figures. While a mother’s love is priceless, caregiving can be depleting. After all, you’re spending a ton of time taking care of everyone else. The job doesn’t end. If you have little toddlers or newborns, the job can easily become an overnight gig. Though it’s very rewarding, motherhood can be a challenging experience. This is why it’s important to consider the following ways you can manage your schedule and prioritize your life.

1. Use a planner.

Take time out to write down everything you need to get down. When you have everything written down, this frees up mental space. You no longer have to worry about whether or not you forgot about a specific task because you’ve written it all down. Find a planner that you really like. This will make it easier to keep track of what you need to do. Write down all the tasks. As soon as you call to book your appointment for eyebrow threading Jacksonville Beach FL, write the date and time down in your planner. Dry-cleaning pick-up, cleaning the bathtubs and date night with your husband need to make the list as well.

2. Develop discipline.

There will be plenty of times when you don’t feel like cooking or doing laundry. While it’s understood, you have to do what you can to push through. If watching daytime talk shows helps you get through the tasks, turn on the television. If you like to play music while you cook, create a Spotify playlist. Get creative about the ways you discipline yourself to get the work done. You might even want to incentivize the process. If you finish a ton of tasks ahead of schedule, take yourself out to get a massage. As you remain persistent in your ability to develop discipline, it’ll serve in countless ways in your life.

3. Cultivate your own rhythms.

As you happily serve your husband and children, it’s important to remember yourself. Cultivate your own rhythms. Find your own hobbies. It might be that you love to drink a large cup of coffee while you read the morning paper. You might like to work out on the treadmill in your home gym. It’s also good to find hobbies that don’t involve your family. You might decide that you love to blog. If you love cycling, find time to attend a class a few times each week. It’s good to develop these habits so that you can have an identity that’s not directly tied to other people.

Preparing for Teacher Appreciation Week

March 7, 2019

thank-you-teacher

Teacher appreciation week is the time when teachers get an extra “thank you” for all of the work that they do in the classroom. There are all sorts of ways for you to show your gratitude, too. Taking the time to prepare will ensure that you are ready to send your child into school with extra thanks.

Write a Card

Get out some construction paper and art supplies. Have your child create a card for their teacher. You can send this in alone or have it accompany a gift. You may want to have your child draw a picture inside of the card or even stamp out their hand with some finger paint. Make it as personal as possible because your child’s teacher will likely want to hold onto this for years to come.

Send a Gift

Sending in a gift is a great way to show that you appreciate all of their hard work. You can choose something that is a crowd favorite. For example, with a cookie delivery Atlanta moms can send in delicious cookies without having to go down to the school. You are busy enough. Using a delivery service allows you to send something in while ensuring that it is going to be well received.

Volunteer

Teachers are often on the go all week long. They rarely get help inside of the classroom. Consider volunteering for a few hours one day. They are sure to appreciate the help, especially since you are offering it freely. Depending on the grade that your child is in, you might be reading to the students, helping to cut out various things, or even making copies down in the office.

Teacher appreciation does not have to be stressful. Once you know to plan for it, you can focus on it now so that you are ready when the school announces that it is taking place.

Seeking In-Home Healthcare

February 27, 2019

woman-elderly-nurse-healthcare-homeWhen you or someone you love is no longer able to live independently, the decision about what comes next can be heartbreaking. It is no secret that many elderly people prefer to age in their own home. That makes sense; it is what they know and where they are comfortable. Change is scary, and nursing homes do not always have the best reputation.

Staying home can be scary in a different way, for both the individual and their loved ones. Without the skills necessary to live independently, spending time at home means risking falls, inadequate nutrition, and hygiene problems. Couple that with concern over ongoing medical issues and it is easy to see why staying home seems impossible.

Using elder care assistance is one way to keep your loved one in their home for a longer period. Skilled nursing help can provide much of the same care that would normally be available in the nursing home setting. Trained staff can monitor health status, dispense medications, change wound dressings, provide physical and occupational therapy and simply visit with the patient.

Skilled in-home healthcare providers can provide short-term help as a loved one recovers from an illness or hospitalization, or long-term care as part of the normal aging process. When selecting someone to work with your loved ones, there are some things you should keep in mind.

Find out how long the provider has been in the area. You want an established company that you can trust to be there for your loved one. Ask about financial arrangements. Medicare pays for in-home care under certain conditions. If your loved one is recovering from hospitalization or a doctor recommends the care, part-time help may be covered. It is important to have a plan in place for paying for the service, and the healthcare agency has experience in these matters and may have some recommendations.

You should also know exactly what type of care your loved one would receive. For some needs, a trained caregiver will be sufficient. If your loved one needs help bathing and preparing meals, this may be the perfect, more affordable option. If your loved one has needs that are more extensive, is a fall risk, or otherwise needs closer or more highly skilled supervision, you want to make sure the company provides that option as well.
