Home and Family from a SAHWM's Perspective

The Pregnancy Timeline

October 22, 2014

pregnant womanPregnancy is an exciting time for any woman. It is filled with new experiences and changes – even doubts, questions and fears.

If you are pregnant, the medical practitioner will start dating your pregnancy from the first day of your last normal menstruation. This is the most accurate way to date pregnancies since most people are not certain when they actually conceived. Depending on a woman’s cycle (i.e. cycles longer or shorter than 28 days, or completely irregular, the doctors may adjust their dates a bit.

Pregnancy last for about 40 weeks and doctors estimate your due date forty weeks from the first day of the last period. You may deliver the baby anytime from 4 weeks before the due date to two weeks after.

Have you noticed that the timeline above is in terms of weeks? It is because using months can be confusing and can be less accurate since calendar months do not fall neatly into four-week periods.

A Gift for Hubby’s Niece

October 20, 2014

How was your weekend?

Last weekend, we attended a birthday party of my hubby’s niece. She’s a music lover so we gave her one of those ibanez j custom guitars that she had wanted for so long now.

I also love playing guitar but lately, I haven’t practiced much. I guess I’ll start practicing playing guitar again so that I can teach hubby’s niece how to play the gift that we gave to her.

Do You Have Homeowner’s Insurance?

October 16, 2014

Is home insurance really necessary?

Some people drop coverage if they are not required to have it. In the event of damage, an uninsured homeowner might lose the building and a place to live. A home is the largest asset most people have, so losing yours could be ruinous. Even if fire or wind damage never occurs, a slip by an uninsured worker on a slippery tile staircase could cost a homeowner thousands for medical care and lost wages. You can do your research online for homeowners insurance in burlington nc or other states.

10 Things Stay at Home Mothers Can Do at Home

July 29, 2014

Motherhood has its perks but most of the time, the responsibilities are keeping us, mothers, from doing some things that will further us as individuals.

Here are some of the things you can do at home as a stay at home wife and mother (or even if you are a working mom too):

1. Learn how to play a musical instrument

You don’t need to invest in some expensive instrument but learning a new skill like playing a musical instrument will not only help keep your mind sharp, you also exposes your kids to music. You can check out http://www.musiciansfriend.com for some nice musical instruments.

2. Read and Be Updated

Most stay at home wives and mothers that I know are not updated with current events. It is important to be in the know especially of stuff that concerns politics, the government and other current events and issues. Your awareness will help you decide in choosing candidates during election. Besides, it’s a good feeling to be able to talk to others about these topics.

Why Do Infants Need Car Seats?

July 23, 2014

car seatWhen my youngest daughter was born, we were not allowed to leave the hospital without a safety-approved car seat. The nurses adjusted the car seat to fit the baby. I grew up in a country where car seats are rarely used so I was a bit hesitant to see my teeny-tiny little one strapped into an infant car seat.

According to the book written by Dr. Benjamin Spock that was entitled Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care, one of the biggest dangers a newborn faces is the ride home from the hospital. It is important to place the newborn in the back seat facing backward; putting them in front of a working air bag can seriously injure or even kill a small child.

The new advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that was published in the April 2011 issue of Pediatrics is for parents to keep their toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat.

Dennis Durbin, MD, FAAP, said that “A rear-facing child safety seat does a better job of supporting the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash, because it distributes the force of the collision over the entire body. For larger children, a forward-facing seat with a harness is safer than a booster, and a belt-positioning booster seat provides better protection than a seat belt alone until the seat belt fits correctly.”

According to the AAP website, deaths in motor vehicle crashes is still the leading cause of death for children ages 4 and older.

You can read more about car seats at Healthy Children or learn more about this car seat recommendation update from AAP.

10 Ways to Set a Positive Example for Your Child

May 23, 2014

parents-father-mother-daughter-son-childrenChildren are like sponges. They imitate, learn and look up to adults as role models. As parents, we should make sure that we set positive examples for our children so that they will grow up to be better persons.

I was given a leaflet entitled “10 Ways to Set a Positive Example for Your Child” from Positive Promotions during my child’s recent wellness check-up. I would like to share this list with you.

  1. Exhibit the character traits that you want for your child.
  2. Demonstrate good habits about hygiene, safety and health.
  3. Show you enjoy reading and learning. Your child will imitate you.
  4. Be consistent and firm but loving. Never use physical punishment when you discipline; it teaches that violence is ok.
  5. Work on any personal addictions or issues. If necessary, get help and serve as an example in that way.
  6. Be financially responsible. Stick to a budget, set aside savings, and be a smart consumer.
  7. Do your part for the environment by reducing, reusing, and recycling at home.
  8. When you make a mistake, apologize. Let your child see you make amends.
  9. Volunteer and/or donate to charities so your child learns the value of helping those in need.
  10. Be a good citizen by obeying laws, staying informed, and getting involved.

happy family
Again, I do not take credit for the list stated above. Nevertheless, I am sure that you will find it useful. Do you agree?

Belated Happy Mothers Day

May 21, 2014

I am a stay at home wife and mother but I just realized that I never made a post about the recent Mothers Day celebration. Well, here is my belated greetings to all wonderful moms in the world: belated happy mothers day!

We had lunch at a sushi restaurant last Mothers Day. After that, we went to a local store and shopped for a denon dj guitar. We were planning to buy a guitar stand as well but the salesperson (who is my husband’s cousin) mentioned that we can save on guitar stands if we wait for their Memorial Day sale by the end of the month.

And that’s what we will do.

Till then!
